North State Symphony Season Finale

firebird

The last performance of the 2008-2009 Symphony season was tonight.  The program was:

      • Mozart Symphony #39
      • Gershwin Piano Concerto (finale)
      • Mozart Violin Concerto #5 (first movement)
      • Stravinsky Firebird Suite

We got there early to hear Kyle Wiley Pickett’s talk about the pieces.  He’s always informative and fun.  After the talk it was just a short walk in 90F heat to Laxon Auditorium on the CSU Chico campus.

It was all good.   Tonight was the night they do every season where the Young Artists Audition winners perform.  Emily Loeffler, piano in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto, was the college age winner, and Adriel Taslim, violin in Mozart’s Violin Concerto #5, was the high school age winner.  What a pleasure to see young people interested in classical music.  (It’s worth noting that Emily Loeffler’s dress was absolutely beautiful and flattering.)

The full orchestra played Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, and it was wonderful.  Wonderful.  Soul enriching.  Head bobbing.  Standing Ovation-worthy.  The Firebird Suite has been one of my favorite pieces of music since the 1970s when I heard Don Sebesky’s jazz orchestra do it.  The orchestra played well, very very well.  Bravo!

We are so lucky to have a local symphony orchestra that gets better every year.
