The older I get, the less I need or want “things”. Please ignore the electronics – they are necessities.
But… I keep buying books, especially knitting books I neither need nor read. This morning it finally dawned on me why. I want to support the people who work so hard to create these lovely books. I want them to reap some reward for their creativity and expertise. (Honest. No joke.)
I follow several blogs, and this morning I was reading today’s entry from she shoots sheep shots, by Gale Zucker who is a very good photographer. She and Joan Tapper have written/photographed Shear Spirit: Ten Fiber Farms, Twenty Patterns, and Miles of Yarn. That was when I realized that the purchasing of these books, for me at least, is a way to support the knitting community, because I don’t need this book and after I flipped through the beautiful photos I would probably put it on the shelf – but I still feel an urge to buy it. Pretty soon, I’ll have to start donating these books to the library to make room for more!
And, I buy books at most independent book stores I go into. I want independent book stores to live long and prosper.
On the other hand, I need to keep in mind that I can’t support the entire knitting community all on my own. I try, but it’s a big job. So – go buy a beautiful book (knitting or not) from an independent book store today.
Thanks Diane!! We appreciate your support.
ReplyDeleteAt my house, you have to add the old German lace magazines that are no longer in print and which I have bought through E-Bay. Renate
